Supporting our local charity of the year
 Garden House Hospice - Letchworth

You may remember that last summer we decided to support Garden House with raising funds for their Hospice in Letchworth – see blog JUL14

http://www.charleswilsoncarpets.co.uk/charity-of-the-year

With the help of our wonderful customers we managed to raise £2686.00, most of this from our £10 per order over £1000 and an amazing £700+ from just selling small off-cuts of carpet and old samples through one of our Landlords empty shops in the town. Many thanks to John Ray Ltd for the loan!

It brought it home just how important places like GHH are to the community when only just a couple of weeks ago a neighbour of one of the team was given wonderful care for their last few days by the superb staff at the hospice.

They provide such a warm and surprisingly up beat environment for patients and families alike – they are a far cry from most peoples expectation of a sombre or depressing place; they give comfort, support and most of all great dignity to those with terminal illnesses.  This is one of the good reasons why we chose GHH as this type of charity often does not get the publicity and popular support they richly deserve.

Our local paper has covered the story, please see the article below:

Thank you to every one who contributed and if you would like to help collect for GHH we do still have loose change collection boxes for you to keep at home.

Our Charity of the Year

Garden House Hospice

We decided this year to help one our longest standing customers and one of the most deserving charities in the area – the Garden House Hospice. Along time ago we started to work for the Hospice by flooring their fund raising shops and over the years we have got to know many of the wonderful staff and volunteers.

Who are the Garden House Hospice

The Hospice is based in Letchworth and was opened in 1990 and serves most of North Herts. It offers invaluable support to patients from the community with a terminal diagnosis.

Some of the services they provide are:
  • Out-Patient Care  -for  medical consultations and treatments, complementary therapy or physiotherapy.
  • Day Hospice – for people to drop by for a chat and support in a wonderfully caring environment, giving a break for carers, as well as support for patients, family and friends.
  • Access to : Complementary Therapist, Physiotherapist, Doctors, Family Support
  • Twelve in-patient beds, for times when symptoms prove troublesome and more attention is needed than is possible at home.
Volunteers play an enormous part in helping the Hospice to run smoothly and efficiently, giving their time freely working as part of the multi-disciplinary team and in support of fundraising activities. Their generous spirit makes the hospice a friendly and welcoming place, you wont’ find it depressing or sad – everyone is so positive!

What we are doing to help

  • £10 donation for every order over £1000 - £200 was raised in just the first month!
  • For every customer borrowing samples we are giving a collection box, so GHH can benefit  if they would like to collect up their small change
  • Selling our off-cuts and samples – often they go in landfill but much is re-usable, some pieces are big enough to carpet a stairs, all proceeds are going straight to GHH (look in at no: 66 Hermitage Rd from this Saturday)
  • Donation of raffle prize: 30 sq mtrs of carpet from “Regency” carpets, along with all accessories and fitting by us – tickets on sale in September
  • Leaflet distribution for all events
  • We have yet to persuade a member of staff to sit in a bath of beans for the day but you never know….
If you would like a collection box or have any great fundraising ideas please get in touch!
